Application to develop ‘Dolphin’ site as retail and residential hotspot
London, 29 December 2003 …. The Mall, in partnership with ASDA and Barratt Homes are planning a major retail and residential development on the former Dolphin site that, if approved, will bring to Romford suburban town centre Britain’s best value retailer, over 200 new homes and over 450 new jobs. This landmark development will increase shopper choice and considerably improve the strength of the Romford retail offer and further promote the Romford Revival.
Ken Ford, Chief Executive of The Mall, operator of 11 shopping centres throughout the UK including the Liberty 2 centre in Romford commented, “This development brings to Liberty 2 a major magnet retailer in ASDA. We are delighted to be leading this important application which will massively improve the range of retailer offer to our shoppers”.
The redevelopment of the Dolphin site, originally built as a recreational complex in the 1970’s, will restore the balance of new development in the northern part of the town centre an and is an excellent example of the best in urban regeneration and design to meet the long-term needs of local residents, shoppers and retailers alike.
Richard Petyt Senior Development Surveyor for ASDA said: “We are delighted to be part of this exciting town centre regeneration scheme which gives us the opportunity to bring our legendary low prices, outstanding customer service and unbeatable range to Romford. A new ASDA would offer choice and competition to local people as well as providing 450 new quality jobs.”
Barratt East London Managing Director Richard Reynolds said, “This is a tremendous example of the kind of urban regeneration the Government is trying to encourage, bringing outstanding economic and social benefits to Romford.
