The Eastside Partnership - Mixed-Use Development - Birmingham, Eastside

Date: 16 May 2003

The Eastside Partnership, a joint venture between Peter Beckwith and Peter Stratton, has submitted its first proposals for a mixed use development on phase one of its site in Birmingham’s Eastside. The site borders the ring road and is part of the £6 billion, 180 hectare regeneration scheme, supported by Birmingham City Council, to establish a new creative and learning district for the city.

The Eastside Partnership has submitted a detailed planning application to Birmingham City Council for a 750 bedroom student accommodation building, developed jointly with UNITE Group plc; and 270 new homes in conjunction with Taylor Woodrow Developments Ltd. Subject to planning consent, the developers aim to begin construction in April 2004 with the student accommodation available by autumn, in time for the 2005 academic year.

Peter Stratton says: “Proposals for the balance of the site are now being worked up by The Eastside Partnership with FPD Savills advising on the residential elements, the ultimate aim being to create a mixed-use development of 1.3 million sq ft retail, office and residential space surrounding the proposed City Park and Library.

“The Eastside regeneration initiative as a whole is also gathering momentum. Work is well underway for the demolition of the Masshouse elevated concrete collar dual carriageway which is scheduled for completion in time for the opening of the Bull Ring Shopping Centre in September 2003.

“Construction on certain elements has already commenced, including Millennium Point, which includes a museum, technology and innovation centre with retail and leisure facilities. Also, the Royal College of Organists has announced plans to relocate from London to the listed Curzon Street station adjoining the proposed £130 million City Library designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership,” added Stratton.
