Gazeley Properties - Retail Development - Falkirk, Davids Loan

Date: 19 May 2003

Gazeley Properties has completed the construction of a 26,941 sq m (290,000 sq ft) state-of-the-art distribution centre for Asda, Britain’s best value retailer, in Falkirk, Scotland.

Incorporating 2,782 sq m (30,000 sq ft) of offices, the centre has been designed for the storage and distribution of chilled and frozen goods and features four separate temperature controlled storage areas. The development is part of the retailer’s ongoing programme to modernise its distribution network throughout the UK and will service Asda stores throughout Scotland.

The £27 million facility is located on a previously derelict site near Alcan works on David’s Loan, approximately a mile from Asda’s existing Grangemouth warehouse. The new centre will operate in conjunction with the Grangemouth unit, which is currently being converted to handle ambient temperature products.

Gazeley, Asda’s wholly owned property development subsidiary, used its joint venture main contractors, GSE and Simons to undertake the mammoth construction programme and complex fit out. Asda has taken occupation of the building which became fully operational this week (16 May 2003).

Developing the project on a brownfield site presented the team with an engineering challenge which required the use of over 2,500 concrete driven piles to support the foundations and ground floor slab prior to construction of the warehouse structure.

Martin McGread, development project manager of Gazeley comments:
“Asda’s Falkirk distribution centre has been a proud accomplishment for both us and the construction team. The successful delivery of the facility was made possible by Gazeley’s partnering approach to supply chain management, using our preferred team of suppliers to create quality bespoke facilities that set us apart from the competition.
