Land Securities - Retail Development - Bristol, Broadmead
Date: 05 Aug 2003
The Bristol Alliance has announced that it has submitted a detailed planning application for its Broadmead expansion project in central Bristol. The detailed designs reveal three stylish new shopping streets, vibrant public areas and a dramatic and innovative glass roof structure which will rejuvenate the Broadmead shopping centre and instill new life into Bristol’s city centre.
The £500m redevelopment of Broadmead will create a new ‘gateway’ to Bristol with a reconfigured Bond Street-Newfoundland Street junction. The landmark four-storey department store is the subject of a separate planning application with its own specialist architect.
The Broadmead scheme was granted outline permission by Bristol City Council in December 2002 and has been endorsed by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. The historic Quakers Friars element of the scheme received detailed consent in April this year.
Commenting on the development, Bristol Alliance Development Director, Bob De Barr, said: “Bristol is an extraordinary city with a special history and a unique cultural energy. We believe that all of this has been reflected in the design of quality buildings and vibrant and exciting retail and public environments that will attract shoppers from a much wider catchment and will act as a catalyst for further investment within Bristol.”
Detailed consent will enable the Alliance to commit further to the scheme, with work beginning as early as summer 2004 and completion by 2007.
