Building Design Partnership - General Development - Portsmouth, Queen Alexandra Hospital site
Date: 07 Aug 2003
Preferred Bidder Selected For Portsmouth Hospital.
Portsmouth Hospitals (NHS) Trust has announced that it has selected its preferred bidder to build a new hospital on the Queen Alexandra Hospital site.
The Preferred Bidder is the Hospital Company (THC), a consortium made up of the Carillion Group and The Royal Bank of Scotland. The architect for the new hospital is Building Design Partnership.
Keith Pavey Managing Director of BDP’s South West offices said of the announcement “This is great news for both BDP and Carillion, who worked together on the recently completed Great Western Hospital in Swindon, and represents our first major Healthcare win following the successful merger of BDP with Whicheloe MacFarlane seven months ago. We are currently working on a number of important PFI schemes around the country including Birmingham, Romford, Wakefield, Brighton and Lymington and expanding our resources to cope with this growing portfolio.
The finalisation of the contract is subject to negotiations over the next 6 months plus the approval, by the Department of Health, of the full business case prepared by the Trust.
This exciting new phase in the redevelopment of the Queen Alexandra Hospital site will provide a new hospital for Portsmouth by 2007 using the Private Finance Initiative.
Plans for the new hospital began in 1996 when, following public consultation, the Trust adopted a plan to centralise all of its acute medical services on the Queen Alexandra Hospital site. This was reviewed by the local health community in July 2002, ensuring the support of all those involved with providing care for patients.
Following the selection of The Hospital Company, there will be six months of intensive work before the contract is due to be signed in early 2004.
