English Partnerships - General Development - Peterborough City Council
Date: 26 Nov 2003
National regeneration agency English Partnerships and Peterborough City Council are forging a strong partnership for the future development of the city, a high-powered London audience has been told.
At English Partnerships’ annual open meeting, held this year in London’s Tate Modern gallery, Peterborough was singled out as an example of how the agency is working with local authorities.
Peterborough City Council chief executive Gillian Beasley was one of two guest speakers at the meeting. She provided the audience of around 200 directors and senior managers from public and private sector organisations with an insight into how English Partnerships is working with the city council on a range of initiatives.
She gave a number of examples of the way English Partnerships is contributing to Peterborough. They included its participation in drawing up the new framework for the future of the city centre, its involvement in plans for development of the South Bank, its financial and practical support for the Positively Peterborough promotional campaign run by Greater Peterborough Investment Agency, and its sponsorship of the Peterborough Festival. In addition, English Partnerships is positively involved in planning and development issues in Bretton, Paston and Eastern Industry areas of Peterborough.
Mrs Beasley said: “English Partnerships is demonstrating openness, a ‘can do’ attitude and a willingness to listen. We are confident that English Partnerships and the city council are working on a shared agenda and shared objectives for Peterborough.”
English Partnerships chairman Margaret Ford told the meeting: “Peterborough is an example of how we are able to work with partners, not just to help bring vibrant new life into city centres but to contribute to a wider urban renaissance. The work being carried out in the city demonstrates how English Partnerships is developing a new role and a new agenda.”
And she paid tribute to Gillian Beasley herself, saying that the Peterborough chief executive had facilitated a new constructive working relationship between English Partnerships and the City Council.
