The London Borough of Greenwich has resolved to grant outline planning permission to Greenwich Reach 2000 Ltd, a joint venture between London Merchant Securities plc, Greenwich Reach Developments Ltd and Clearwater Estates & Properties Ltd. The mixed development, known as 'Greenwich Reach 2000', is located on an 8-acre site on land fronting the River Thames, bordered by Deptford Creek and Thames Street and close to the Cutty Sark. The scheme is expected to create in the region of 1,500 job opportunities.
The regeneration project will provide 55,129 sq m (593,419 sq ft net) of leisure, entertainment, retail, residential and restaurant facilities including, 17.915 sq m of leisure, to provide:
- a 12 screen multiplex
- a big screen theatre
- a casino
- 6324 sq m restaurants.
13,304 sq m of retail floor space which will provide:
- a 2137 sq m (1,500 sq m sales) food store
Remaining components of the scheme include:
- a 130-bedroom hotel, offering extensive leisure facilities
- a boardwalk link to the Cutty Sark Gardens, plus a pedestrian bridge over the Deptford Creek
- 140 luxury flats with attractive river views
- car parking for 850 vehicles.
The development, part of a programme of improvements of the Greenwich Waterfront from Deptford Creek in the west to Thamesmead in the east, will regenerate an otherwise derelict site. In addition, ft will maximise the full potential of the site's 800 metres of riverside frontage by providing the Capital with its most centrally located and prestigious terminal for cruise ships, with a maximum capacity of 50,000 tonnes/240 metres in length.
The comprehensive development will benefit from the recent commencement of works for the extension of the Docklands Light Railway which will provide direct access between Canary Wharf and Lewisham with a new Cutty Sark station in Greenwich providing direct links to the Jubilee Line via Canary Wharf. In addition, a permanent river transport system is planned which will give Greenwich quick and easy access along the River Thames to the new Charing Cross Pier currently under construction. The scheme - in tandem with the complementary Millennium Exhibition - will act as a magnet for domestic and overseas visitors to Greenwich, with numbers expected to rise to 10 million visitors per annum in the year 2000.
