Centros Miller - Mixed-Use Development - Pontypool, £11 million urban regeneration scheme.

Centros Miller has secured detailed planning for its £11 million urban regeneration scheme in Pontypool town centre.
Preliminary works have been completed at the 2.63 ha (6.5-acre) Crane Street site, which is being developed in conjunction with Torfaen County Borough Council and the Welsh Development Agency (WDA).
The 3,809 sq m (41,000 sq ft) development is fully let with the five retail units to be occupied by Argos, Wilkinson’s, Farm Foods and Peacocks.
The scheme is anchored by Tesco, which has taken a unit comprising 4,180 sq m (45,000 sq ft) of space. It will also include a petrol filling station and a 250-space car park.
Ivan Stephenson of Centros Miller, comments: “Now we have received detailed planning permission, work has started on the scheme. It will undoubtedly enhance Pontypool as a retail destination and a place in which local residents can be proud.”
WDA has provided Regeneration Investment Grant for the scheme, with development finance being provided by the Bank of Scotland.
The agency’s director of area development for South East Wales, Ed Bampton, said: “We have been delighted to form part of the team that has brought this scheme forward for development. The project will have a major impact on the commercial vitality of Pontypool’s town centre and contribute to the overall regeneration of the town.”
Holder Mathias Architects have designed the Tesco store, the Crane Street retail units and the central link which will play an important role in the urban regeneration of Pontypool.
The contractor is Taylor Woodrow, Pontypool, Gwent with completion expected by August 2004.
