Humberts - Retail Development - Romsey, Latimer Street

Date: 12 Jul 2004

Romsey's Town Centre Enhancement Scheme has been given a further boost. The Borough Council has just granted planning permission to Brazier Properties for the redevelopment of a prime property in Latimer Street.

Brazier Properties acquired the property last year through the Southampton office of Humberts Commercial. Its planning permission now paves the way for the development of 1,500 sq ft of brand new retail space with two residential flats above.

Located just off the main shopping area of The Hundred, 16 Latimer Street is directly opposite the pedestrian entrance to new Waitrose supermarket in the heart of Romsey town centre. The property has been empty for several years, but Brazier's successful application is set to rejuvenate the property's long retail history - in its time, the building has been a pub, a fish and chip shop and more latterly Thimbles, a purveyor of dress making supplies.

Work will begin later this year to transform the building but in a way which is in keeping with the nature and character of its neighbours and the original façade of the historic building.

Humberts Commercial has been retained by Brazier Properties to find new tenants for the retail development, and the 1,500 sq ft may be let as a single unit or two units of approximately 750 sq ft.

"We are delighted to have secured this property and the planning permission to undertake the redevelopment work," comments Richard Brazier, managing director of Brazier Properties. "With the relocation of Waitrose to its new site, and the arrival of Aldi, this area of the town is currently improving rapidly and will only get better once the British Legion building is demolished, the pedestrian link to the new Waitrose is in place and the Town Centre Enhancement Scheme works are completed.

"We see it as a prime site for redevelopment, with footfall in the area continually increasing, and Humberts are now working with us to find new tenants for the project."

Andrew Archibald, Senior Associate with Humberts commented: "The proposed redevelopment will be of the highest quality. We have already received expressions of interest from a number of potential occupiers and, with its location adjacent to one of the main town centre car parks, 16 Latimer Street is in a prime position which we believe will be extremely popular with both retail and residential occupiers."
