Building Design Partnership - Mixed-Use Development - Leeds, Holbeck, Round Foundry

Date: 19 Jul 2004

The completion of the first phase of the Round Foundry, Holbeck, Leeds, designed by BDP for developers CTP ST James and Crosby Homes, was marked by an event on 14 July attended by Sir Neil Cossons, Chair of English Heritage. In his address Sir Neil referred to the role of conservation and good contemporary design in the regeneration of great industrial cities, and cited the Round Foundry as an example of successful regeneration which would attract attention locally and nationally.

The Round Foundry was established over 200 years ago as a 'manufactory of steam engines'. It is the only surviving first-generation engineering works and is considered to be of international importance for its industrial archaeology.

BDP's scheme involved the selective demolition of recent structures, the conservation and adaptive re-use of a number of early buildings on the site - most of them listed Grade 2 or Grade 2* - and the construction of new buildings to re-create the historic street pattern which had been lost. The first phase provides 96 apartments, approximately 5000 sq m of office space, a mix of retail units, a pub and a restaurant. The building that gave the site its name no longer exists but is commemorated in BDP's landscape design. The scheme evolved from a conceptual masterplan prepared by Leeds architects Regan Miller Associates.

A further phase, the shell-repair of the Grade II* listed Green Sand Foundry - one of the earliest buildings on the site - is currently on site and is due for completion later this year (2004).

Building Design Partnership is architect, landscape architect, lighting designer and acoustic consultant for CTP St James and Crosby Homes. Structural engineer is EJC Consulting Engineers,
