Alder King - Mixed-Use Development - Somerset, Ilminster
Date: 27 Sep 2004
Property Consultants Alder King today submitted an application to South Somerset District Council for a major mixed-use development on land at Ilminster predominantly in the ownership of Horlicks Farms and Dairies Ltd, which recently closed its production facility.
The land, which lies between Ilminster and the A303, is to become a major business park in an important strategic location at the junction of the A303 and A358. It is intended that the scheme will provide new headquarters for Gooch & Housego, key local employers, and will offer expansion potential to Powermatic.
In total the scheme involves more than 70 acres of which approximately 7 acres of enabling development will be housing and 14 acres new public open space. The employment areas will be predominantly factories, warehouses and offices, but local services will be incorporated including a convenience store, petrol filling station, public house and crèche.
Grant Watson, Chairman of Alder King, who represents Horlicks Farms and Dairies, today said:
"This application offers an exciting future for Ilminster in the employment sector and will involve a commitment by our clients to not only carry out the necessary flood protection works, but to install the major infrastructure as a first phase of development which will ensure that the serviced plots are immediately available for job creation."
The proposal will at last release land for development that was allocated several years ago and will provide jobs in Ilminster for many who currently commute elsewhere to locations such as Taunton.
The master plan was prepared by Atkins Walters Webster of Bristol and, subject to the relevant planning being granted, it is anticipated that work could commence on site early in the New Year. When fully developed the scheme offers the potential of up to 2,000 jobs.
