Edinburgh House - Mixed-Use Development - Gravesend, Heritage Quarter

Date: 12 Jul 2005

Edinburgh House, the private property investor and development company, in partnership with Gravesham Borough Council today (12 July 2005) announced plans for a £100 million regeneration of Gravesend's Heritage Quarter.

Edinburgh House, which owns the St Georges shopping centre in Gravesend, has been selected as preferred developer for the scheme which will regenerate the town's Heritage Quarter. The scheme is part of the Gravesend Town Centre Strategy, which was formed from objectives set by the Gravesend Delivery Board to regenerate the area.

The mixed-use development will include 90,000 sq ft (8,361 sq m) of retail space, 30,000 sq ft (2,787 sq m) of new leisure and restaurant facilities, a 40-60 bedroom hotel, 10,000 sq ft (929 sq m) of office space and 600 apartments.

In addition, the regeneration, covering both sides of the old high street, will provide a new iconic residential building, new and improved public areas including St Andrew Gardens, new Church community facilities, traffic calming to West St/Crooked Lane and increased connections with the riverside as well as improvements to the river walkway.

Tony Quayle, managing director of Edinburgh House, commented: "Edinburgh House is delighted to be awarded preferred developer status and we look forward to working in partnership with Gravesham Borough Council and the local public in regenerating Gravesend town centre.

"We are already committed to the town, having invested more than £60 million to date. With a further investment of £100 million in the Heritage Quarter development, we hope to bring Gravesend's vision for its own regeneration into reality."

Cllr John Burden, leader of Gravesham Borough Council, said: "These proposals and the amount of investment mark a real shift in gears for the development of Gravesend's town centre. The benefits for the local community will be massive - additional open public space, increase in available parking and more affordable housing - all important issues for the people of Gravesham. Today marks a crucial opportunity for the local community to have their say on the future of Gravesend town centre and help shape our town's future. "

It is anticipated that, following extensive public consultation, a planning application will be submitted by the end of the year with works commencing in summer 2006.

The architect is Leslie Jones.
