Forsters - General Development - Stanmore, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital

Date: 21 Jul 2005

The planning team at Forsters has been appointed by the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) to advise on the outline planning application for the major £122 million redevelopment of the RNOH site at Stanmore in Middlesex and to deal with any Section 106 and Section 278 Agreements. The Forsters team, led by head of planning Michael Cunliffe, won the work following a competitive tendering exercise.

The RNOH which is one of Britain's leading centres of orthopaedic excellence, is applying for the redevelopment of the 112 acre site to provide a new PFI hospital, along with key worker, private and affordable housing. The site is situated in the Green Belt.

Forsters has considerable expertise in handling planning applications for landowners, developers and public sector bodies. Recent experience on major public projects includes acting for Chester City Council on the redevelopment of Chester City centre, acting for Thurrock Borough Council on the London Gateway project, and for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea on the redevelopment of the Lots Road power station.

Forsters also acted for the City University in securing planning permission for a landmark building in St John Street, Islington to accommodate the School of Social and Human Science and for Whitelands College (Part of Roehampton University) in securing planning permission for a new university campus at Parkstead House, London SW15. The team also has vast experience of drafting Section 106 Agreements and Michael Cunliffe has been described as 'one of the country's leading practitioners' in this area by Chambers directory.

The new development, which will occupy the same footprint as the current buildings, will provide the RNOH with state-of-the-art premises in one block to replace a variety of outdated buildings, some of which date from the Victorian period. The hospital will continue to function throughout the redevelopment. Construction is due to begin in 2007 and the new hospital is planned to open by 2010.

"This is a major success for the planning team in the face of stiff competition," commented Forsters senior partner Sophie Hamilton. "The RNOH were impressed by Michael Cunliffe's experience of planning applications for major developments and his expertise in dealing with planning agreements."

Michael Cunliffe will be assisted on the matter by Archana Hogarth, a senior planning solicitor who has recently joined Forsters from Campbell Hooper.

RNOH is delighted to welcome Michael and Archana to tithe Redevelopment Team and with their input hopes to achieve determination of the outline planning application in the Autumn of this year.
