Building Design Partnership - Mixed-Use Development - Crawley, Crawley Town Centre

Date: 10 Aug 2005

BDP has been selected as architect and master planner, with Grosvenor, for the £558 million regeneration which will transform Crawley town centre.

The Grosvenor team with BDP won against strong competition from Land Securities with Allies & Morrison, Capital Shopping Centres with Chapman Taylor and Westfield.

The selection for this major retail led mixed use scheme was made by Crawley Borough Council and English Partnerships with advice from CBRE who prepared the brief.

The scheme covers a 25 acre site in the northern part of the town centre. Proposals include linking a renewed pedestrianised Boulevard to Queens Square and the existing retail area via two new streets forming a strong new shopping circuit. In addition two new squares, together with a new urban park, will act as green gateways into this part of Crawley.

The proposals comprise retail - including two anchor stores, offices, including a relocated Town Hall, housing, restaurants and a hotel.

Crawley Borough Council's intention is to create a new sustainable community and a sustainability strategy is in place.

An outline planning application is due to be submitted next year (2006) with simultaneous detailed planning for the new Town Hall. Approvals are expected in 2007 and subject to planning consent the development could be complete by mid 2011.

The full winning team comprises: Grosvenor, BDP, GVA Grimley, Capita Symonds; Cushman & Wakefield Healey & Baker; EC Harris and Boodle Hatfield.
