Farrells - Offices Development - London W1, The Royal Institution
Date: 31 Aug 2005
Farrells were commissioned by the Royal Institution in 1999 to develop a masterplan that would realise the vision of its new Director, Baroness Susan Greenfield, to open the building to the public. The objective is to enable the learning and discourse of science in a new "Salon for Science" whilst also celebrating within an exhibition experience - co-designed with Event Communications - the scientific heritage of the Ri in relation to the science of today and beyond. The overall objective is to achieve a radical conversion and adaptation of this building to provide dynamic, extensive new facilities for a wider audience. Farrells masterplan provides a new public route connecting two main stairs on three floors of the Grade I listed building. On route a new 'public square' or atrium for the building is incorporated around social facilities.
It is anticipated that the project is to be part funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund. Planning approval was granted, with minor conditions, by City of Westminster Council last week.
Due to the listed nature of the interiors, Rodney Melville & Partners have been appointed as the conservation architects and, with their assistance, the proposals have been sympathetically integrated within the existing fabric.
The first phase of the masterplan is due to start early in 2006 and is due for completion within an 18 month time frame.
