Akeler - Offices Development - Aberdeen, Stoneywood Road
Date: 13 Sep 2005
BP has appointed international office and business park specialist, Akeler, as the developer of its new 22,000 sq m office complex in Aberdeen.
The new office headquarters will be built on the 15-acre Stoneywood Business Centre site, adjacent to the company's existing building in Dyce. The new development is scheduled for completion in 2007 and proposals for the existing BP site will be brought forward by Akeler next year.
Akeler was selected as the preferred developer from a list of more than 20 office specialists. The new development has been designed to achieve a 'very good' BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating and will use energy-efficient materials and technologies to create modern workspace.
The offices have been designed with a high performance façade to minimise air filtration and heating costs while a carbon management monitoring programme has been developed to minimise CO2 consumption and track energy use.
The office complex will feature seven wings on three levels, providing four independently-leased zones, all with associated car parking. BP & Akeler are working closely with Cambridge University to deliver a naturally ventilated atrium 'street'. It will form the main walkway connecting the wings of the building and will employ the latest thermal and fluid modelling techniques.
The design of the street coupled with the use of a displacement air conditioning system through the office areas will have a significant impact on minimising energy use. It will deliver a building that offers a 47 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions equivalent to an annual energy saving of £130,000 when compared against the industry standard typical air condition office. A biodiversity action plan will also be implemented to provide a rich landscape for the surrounding area.
Dave Blackwood, Director for BP's North Sea business, said: "The decision to construct a new office complex demonstrates the company's long term commitment to Aberdeen."
"Our North Sea operations will remain an integral and important part of the BP Group's activities for many years to come and it is important we have a high standard of office accommodation to support our future activities. Akeler was selected for its expertise in delivering innovative, high quality office schemes for major corporates across the UK."
Commenting on the development, James Cole, Chief Executive of Akeler said: "By working with BP we have the opportunity to design and create dynamic office headquarters which reflects its status as a world-class business.
"Using the latest in design innovation and working with high specification, energy-efficient materials, it will bring a new quality of office development to Aberdeen and set the standard for other major occupiers in the region."
