Luszczak Associates - Mixed-Use Development - Hull, Railway Street

Date: 14 Oct 2005

Landscape architect, Luszczak Associates, has been appointed by Citybuild to design the c. £1.25 million upgrade to Railway Street. The scheme received planning consent in July 2005 and is a key element of the City Centre Masterplan.

The RailwayHull Marina Street scheme, which borders the west side of Hull Marina, is designed to improve the area, enhance connections between the city and the waterfront while retaining its heritage.

Luszczak Associates' design, therefore, retains the historic street cobbles and old railway tracks and enhances them with new lighting, improved surfacing, carefully selected trees and the improvement of public art works.

The completed project will create an important connection to the flagship Humber Quays scheme on the estuary waterfront. It will also improve access to the adjacent Fruit Market area which alongside Humber Quays is one of the masterplan's strategic development areas.

Adam Wasserman, Chief Executive of Hull Citybuild, said: "For the city centre as a whole to be successful, it is vital to connect the different areas. The design and atmosphere of streets is crucial to encourage their use. The improvements to Railway Street are, therefore, very important to the success of the Humber Quays and Fruit Market areas."

Work is expected to commence on the project early in 2006.
