MAPIC - General - Cannes, Retail Future Projects Awards Shortlist Annouced

The shortlist for the Retail Future Projects Awards, which take place at MAPIC in November, has been announced, with architectural designs from all over the world, including Italy, United Kingdom, Austria, Japan, Poland, Spain, China and Australia, making the final twelve.

The work of architects from all over the world has been commended, including projects from HOK International, Chapman Taylor, Jerde Partnership, Woods Bagot, Laguarda Low and The Office. The short listed nominations include retail projects as diverse as a BMW showroom on London's Park Lane, a hair salon at Bondi Junction in Sydney, a fashion outlet centre in Poland and a railway station retail development in Japan.

Visionary retail projects that are still on the drawing board, under construction or completed less than a year by November 2005 were submitted across six categories, and twelve schemes have been short listed for the Awards.

The short listed schemes in each category are:

Retail Regeneration - The Lend Lease Award
- Coop Adratica's Le Oficine Minganti, Bologna (Italy) by Open Project Architettura Ingegneria.
- New West End Company's West End study, London (UK) By HOK International.

Best Retail Outlet at a Transport Hub or Terminus
- Murpark 02 Shopping Centre, Graz (Austria) by ATP Architects & Engineers.
- Tokyu Corporation's Tama Plaza Station, Tokyo (Japan) by Laguarda.Low.

Best Large Retail Development Scheme - The Land Securities Award
- Inge Real Estate's Ziote Tarasay, Warzaw (Poland) by the Jerde Partnership .
- Ing Real Estate's Alcala Magna, Alcalá de Henares (Spain) by Chapman Taylor.

Best Medium Retail Development Scheme
- The Outlet Company's Fashion House Outlet Centre, Gdansk (Poland) By The Office.
- Wan Zhao Real Estate Development Group's Quishing Mixed Use Development, Shanghai (China) by Laguarda.Low.

Best Small Retail Development Scheme
- Luc Smart and Francesco Ruggerino's Luc Espace hair salon, Bondi Junction, Sydney (Australia) by Woods Bagot.
- Tokyo Tatemono's Greenpark Fukuoka (Japan) by Laguarda Low Architects and LLT.

Retail Lighting - The Zumbotel Staff Award
- BMW Group's Mini Showroom, Park Lane, London (UK) by dpa lighting.
- SERCOM's Le Grange Shopping Centre, Cassino (Italy) by Chapman Taylor Architetti.

A top-level international judging panel determined the shortlist, led by Nigel Woolner of Chapman Taylor, with Gerard Devaux of Hammerson; Eric Kuhne of Eric Kuhne & Associates; Chris Taylor of Prudential Property Investment Managers Ltd; Lawrence Higgins, Plaza, and Bob de Barr, President of BCSC and President of the MAPIC Awards.

The Awards Dinner will take place during MAPIC at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes on Wednesday November 16th, immediately following the UK Retail reception. The Dinner will be introduced by Bob de Barr, with Thierry Renault of Reed MIDEM introducing a distinguished industry speaker.

The Awards are supported by Plaza magazine, BCSC and MAPIC and enabled by Battle Associates. The scheme debuted at MAPIC last November as a sister initiative to the highly regarded MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Awards.

MAPIC takes place 16-18 November at the Palais des Festivals, Cannes.
