Discovery Properties - Retail Development - Swindon, £30m Retail Scheme

Date: 07 Nov 2005

Discovery Properties last week heard from the ODPM that it can go ahead with a £30m scheme for a new B&Q superstore in Swindon following a full planning inquiry in April.

The London-based developer has had a two-year wait since the local authority planners' decision to approve the scheme was 'called in'. Work on the new 110,000 sq ft (15,000 sq m) superstore will start early next year, with completion due in the autumn.

Paul Clark development director for Discovery Properties said: "we are obviously delighted by the decision, and after the long hiatus are keen to get on site early next year."

Discovery Properties are working in conjunction with Swindon Borough Council, the land owners and B&Q to deliver the scheme which is sited on the former local authority highways depot at Barnfield, to the north-west of the town centre.

The superstore will be operated by B&Q as a single stand alone unit, providing over 40,000 products and employment for 250 full and part-time workers. The scheme will provide a garden centre and builders yard as well as improved road access.
