Crowley - General - Civic Society Award
Date: 09 Dec 2005
London based civil engineering and highway infrastructure company Crowley, has been awarded the Civic Society Award from the St Albans Civic Society in recognition of the restorative work that the company carried out within the environs of the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Albans.
The Civic Society Award was the most prestigious award of the evening, and was presented to Crowley and its partners in the restoration project, St Albans City Council and the Abbey itself.
St Albans Civic Society is a non-political organisation made up of a cross-section of concerned community members that observe and rate all city construction, heritage, community, retail and domestic projects. The organisation praised the technical handling, team-work, compassion and dedication shown by those involved in the project to ensure that a sympathetic and aesthetic restoration was carried out.
The Cathedral and Abbey Church project, which began in late 2003, saw Crowley work in close partnership with the Abbey and St Albans City Council to refurbish the roads, paths, walls, steps and soft landscaping, as well as the installation of furniture, in the grounds of the Vintry Garden, the North and West Churchyards of the Cathedral and its Romeland Garden.
As with all prestigious heritage projects, much effort was required to ensure that a quality restoration was achieved, with Crowley and its partners searching the length and breadth of the country to source correct material matches.
The award was presented to Crowley's St Albans project management team - project supervisor, Ian Miles and senior contracts manager, Mick Chalkley, by Civic Society Chairman, Eric Roberts and the Deputy Lady Mayoress of St Albans, Eileen Harris.
"To win an award for our part in this project is especially rewarding for us as we so much enjoyed working on a scheme where we were able to help preserve a place of historic beauty that might otherwise have been lost," explained Ian Miles.
"Now the St Albans community and generations to come will be able to enjoy the grounds of the Cathedral and Abbey Church in their true splendour."
There were five other awards presented by The St Albans Civic Society at the event and four certificates of commendation for other outstanding St Albans projects.
