Totty Construction - Offices Development - Wigan, YOI Hindley

Totty Construction has secured its single largest project to date with the National Offender Management Service (NOMS), with an £11.2 million scheme to upgrade accommodation blocks at HMP YOI Hindley, near Wigan. The project is part of NOMS' high profile seven-year partnering Strategic Alliance deal encompassing refurbishment, alteration, extension, planned maintenance and minor works projects for the Service's North-West region.

With work due to commence on site early April, Totty Construction will strip out and refurbish 4, four-storey accommodation blocks at Hindley in a carefully phased project. The scheme encompasses refurbishment across a total of 256 cells - 32 of which will be converted to Safer Cells (anti self-harm cells) with bespoke safer cell furniture and sanitary ware. Shower facilities within the four accommodation blocks will be upgraded and communal recreational areas refurbished.

New steel frame fire escapes will be constructed at the gable ends of each block and structural work includes the complete re-roofing of the facility, with all existing mechanical and electrical systems being removed and replaced with modern services. An upgraded fire alarm system will be installed in offices, the gym and workshop areas as well as the four secure accommodation blocks, which will also receive an upgraded CCTV system. Externally, Totty will erect new security fencing, with the entire project due for completion by November 2008.
