NAI Fuller Peiser - Industrial Development - Felixstowe, Felixstowe Port

Date: 10 Feb 2006

Hutchison Ports, advised by NAI Fuller Peiser, has received the go-ahead for its proposed extension at the Port of Felixstowe.

The extension will add an extra 1km of quay, increasing the total dedicated deepwater container quay to nearly 4km, and will increase the handling capacity of the port from 3.72 million TEU to 5.6 million TEU by 2010.

The scheme is expected to create approximately 1,670 jobs in the region and has an estimated construction cost of £191 million.

John Bowles, head of planning and environment at NAI Fuller Peiser, comments: "We are delighted to receive planning permission for the extension at Felixstowe. NAI Fuller Peiser's planning team has worked extremely hard to secure this approval for our long-standing client Hutchison Ports."

"This success story comes quickly behind the Secretary of State's announcement a few weeks ago that he is minded to approve our planning application for Hutchison Port's other container port development proposal at Bathside Bay, Harwich. Put together, Hutchison Ports' container port handling capacity in the Harwich Haven alone when these schemes are completed will be greater than the current total UK capacity."

As part of the Felixstowe consent, Hutchison Ports has also committed to fund the upgrade of the rail freight network between Felixstowe and Doncaster to accommodate W10 gauge wagons and junction improvements on the A14/A12 around Ipswich.

NAI Fuller Peiser recently expanded its London Planning Team by four people, showing its long term commitment to clients and complicated planning projects, and of its work on The Wellcome Trust Genome Campus Extension in Hinxton has just been voted winner in the category "Planning for Business" at the RTPI Planning Awards 2005.
