DLG Architects - Mixed-Use Development - Huddersfield, The Waterfront Quarter

Date: 01 Mar 2006

On behalf of its client Ramsden and Colne Developments (RCD), DLG Architects has submitted a planning application for a major new £200 million regeneration project that will transform a significant 12 acre waterfront site in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

Following more than 18 months in development and a successful presentation and consultation with local council members, DLG has submitted final proposals for the Waterfront Quarter which will become one the UK's biggest urban renewal projects. Subject to approval, development plans for the welcomed scheme could start on site as early as 2007.

The Waterfront Quarter will include 750,000 sq ft of state of the art offices, residential apartments, restaurants, cafes, a hotel, a gym and a crèche. With a balance of commercial facilities and living space it is anticipated that the development will create a new vibrant and sustainable environment and generate up to 2000 jobs when completed.

The Waterfront Quarter is situated on triangle of industrial land currently occupied by Sellers Engineers. The mile long site fronts along the River Colne and Huddersfield Narrow Canal and is adjacent to a busy road network that gives access to the town centre. A major part of the planning strategy was to deliver a scheme that incorporated these location aspects for the benefit of public access and as such the development team has consulted in detail with the Highways Authority. The final designs incorporate links with the surrounding area, acting as a catalyst for further development in and around the town.

Paul Sheen at Ramsden & Colne Developments, comments, "We are delighted to be working in partnership with Kirklees Metropolitan Council to submit final proposals for The Waterfront Quarter. Due to its unusual position in such close proximity to the town centre, the process has involved more detailed consultation with a number of expert groups and more than 18 months of detailed planning. We feel confident that these final proposals will deliver the most viable, effective and beneficial environment for its community."

Knight Frank Partner Mike Dove, who will be marketing the development commented, "This showpiece project is of regional and national significance. The Waterfront Quarter will provide a destination comparable to the very best regeneration schemes already undertaken at Leeds Clarence Dock and Sheffield's Heart of the City. We know there is massive pent up demand for better quality employment, residential and leisure accommodation close to the facilities of central Huddersfield. The Waterfront Quarter will address this appetite at both local and inward investor levels."

It is anticipated that a public consultation will take place during April 2006 with a view to seeking detailed planning for construction to start in early 2007. Property agents, Knight Frank will market the scheme.
