Chartered Institute of Building - General - Construction Managers Support Nuclear Energy

Date: 03 Mar 2006

A recent online poll by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) revealed that 66% of construction managers were in favour of developing nuclear energy.

Industry and trade unions recently joined forces to urge the government to back a new generation of nuclear power stations in the face of global warming and looming blackouts.

Currently nuclear power provides 20 percent of British electricity, a figure set to drop to eight percent within seven years and to zero by 2035, as ageing nuclear power plants are shut down.

Faced with the prospect of blackouts by 2012 as electricity output falls and demand rises, the government is carrying out an urgent review of its energy options, including new nuclear plants.

Over 400 construction managers were polled.
