Totty Building Services - General - School Health & Safety Awareness Campaign

Date: 31 Mar 2006

Totty Building Services has launched an awareness campaign to remind children of the very real dangers posed by construction sites. The campaign was officially launched at Paddock Junior Infants and Nursery School in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, where Totty is currently undertaking a £1 million project to create a new Children's Centre.

The company has won an increasing volume of education sector projects after successfully securing a place on the Kirklees Metropolitan Council's 'Children's Centres General Framework Arrangement' in 2005. In launching its schools health & safety campaign, Totty Building Services is encouraging children to think about site safety and what measures the industry takes to ensure the safety and well being of construction workers and members of the public. Pupils will then be invited to design their very own health & safety poster, with the winning entry displayed across Totty sites.

A party of ten Year 5 pupils from Paddock Junior School were treated to a site visit under the careful supervision of Totty Construction's group health & safety advisor, Dr David Resendez, where they had first hand experience of site safety. These pupils then used their experiences to teach fellow classmates about good site safety and helped come up with ideas for the poster competition.

Richard Dodd, headmaster at Paddock Junior Nursery and Infants School, explained: "The opportunity for pupils to see the dangers of construction sites for themselves was an extremely important lesson and the poster campaign is a great way to keep the health & safety message in our children's minds whilst our new facilities are being constructed."

Dr David Resendez, added: "Our latest initiative to educate children about the risks of construction sites goes beyond a simple lecture in assembly and we hope to engage pupils and educate through a creative channel. At this time of year it is especially important to get the safety message across as lighter nights and impending school holidays can multiply risks.

"The chance to have their poster designs displayed on Totty sites throughout the region has proved a real incentive with the children at Paddock school and we are greatly looking forward to judging the entries."
