Atlas Ward Structures - Retail Development - Dunstable, ProLogis Park

Date: 12 May 2006

Atlas Ward Structures is currently working on a regeneration scheme in Dunstable, on behalf of main contractors Fitzpatrick and ProLogis Developments Limited.

The site was originally the home of the Bedford Truck manufacturing plant. Built in 1955 by General Motors, the plant employed up to 9,000 people, but recession and foreign imports took their toll and the plant closed in 1983.

Atlas Ward Structures were awarded the contract, due to their excellent track record and good working relationships, with both Fitzpatrick and ProLogis.

The North Yorkshire based steelwork contractor is undertaking the design, fabrication and erection of in excess of 2,300 tonnes of structural steelwork and decking for this development.

ProLogis Park Dunstable consists of two distribution units (DC 1 & DC 2) which are being built on a speculative basis. DC 1 has a footprint of approx 536,000 sq ft (49,796 sq m) and DC 2 measures approx 239,500 sq ft (22,250 sq m).

Commenting on the new development, Paul Weston, First Vice President of ProLogis said:

"We have already had significant interest in ProLogis Park Dunstable, so we are pleased that we can move ahead with construction work, which will be completed by the middle of 2006."

"ProLogis Park has a great many attractions for potential occupiers including its Assisted Area status, a large pool of labour in the distribution and manufacturing sectors, competitive rents and supportive local authority, so it will help Dunstable to compete on an equal footing with traditional M1 commercial locations."

Andy Lewis, Team Leader - Economic Regeneration - South Bedfordshire District Council, said,

"These are exciting times for Dunstable and the regeneration of this site will create a substantial number of employment opportunities, which will greatly benefit local people."
