Atlas Ward Structures - Industrial Development - Pontefract, £50 Million Development

Date: 16 Jun 2006

Atlas Ward Structures is currently working on rebuilding a popcorn factory in Pontefract for Monkhill Confectionery. - Bovis Lend Lease is the principal contractor. The original factory was destroyed by fire in June 2005.

Monkhill Confectionery is a subsidiary of Cadbury Trebor Bassett and the Monkhill factory supplied all of the UK's Butterkist demand, plus own-label popcorn and chocolate-coated confectionery for cinema operators and retailers. The company has been based in the town for over 80 years and is one of the biggest employers in the area.

The North Yorkshire-based steelwork contractor has designed, fabricated and erected 700 tonnes of structural steelwork for this project. The footprint for this building is 94,367 sq ft. The scope also includes decking and intumescent fire protection.

Atlas Ward won the contract due to a negotiated tight lead in period and its proven track record with Bovis Lend Lease. The company has recently completed a Retail & Leisure Park in Blackburn for Bovis Lend Lease, which consisted of over 1,050 tonnes of structural steelwork and measured in excess of 173,000 sq ft.

The popcorn factory is due to be fully operational in March 2007, and the overall contract value is £50 million.
