Forth Ports PLC - Mixed-Use Development - Edinburgh, Western Harbour

Date: 16 Aug 2006

Forth Properties, the property division of Forth Ports PLC, has signed a deal with Scottish and Southern Energy worth over £1 million pounds to provide the gas and electrical infrastructure for the second phase of its Western Harbour Development in Leith.

The Western Harbour development will see the creation of a new community of over 3,000 homes along with commercial and retail developments in the newly created Forthside district of Edinburgh. The contract with Scottish and Southern Energy will see the firm providing power and gas to all aspects of the development.

Regeneration activity in Leith began in the 1980's, leading in the 1990's to the opening of the Malmaison Hotel, followed by the Scottish Executive building and Ocean Terminal Retail Centre. By 2001, Western Harbour and Granton Harbour had emerged as significant development sites and were granted outline planning consent in 2002 and 2003 respectively. Forth Ports has to date invested over £100m into regeneration projects in the North of Edinburgh.

Forth Properties' Managing Director, Nathan Thompson, said: "We have been very pleased with Scottish & Southern's innovative approach to providing us with the right energy solution for Western Harbour. Providing utilities for a major development such as Western Harbour is an ambitious and complex undertaking and we look forward to working with them to successfully roll out this project. Scottish and Southern are now also well placed to support Forth Ports with our aspirations towards minimizing our carbon footprint with regard to energy usage for our regeneration projects".

SSE's Business Development Manager Frank Clifton said, "Western Harbour is a high profile development and a significant project for Edinburgh. It gives Scottish and Southern Energy an opportunity to provide a multi utility package and we were delighted to win the contract. The project is ambitious but highly achievable and we look forward to completing the job on schedule and building upon our relationship with Forth Ports."
