Galliford Try - General - Eaglesham Moor, Glasgow, £79m Scottish Wind Power Contract Largest in Europe

Date: 20 Oct 2006

Galliford Try plc, the construction and housebuilding group, is delighted to announce that it has won a £79 million construction contract for the Whitelee Wind Farm project for Scottish Power at Eaglesham Moor, south of Glasgow.

The Whitelee project is Europe's biggest onshore wind farm. Work will commence immediately and is expected to last for three years and employ over 250 people. It covers an area approximately 5,500 hectares in size and will include the construction of 140 turbine bases and 90km of access roads. The work will be carried out by its Morrison Construction business in joint venture with Balfour Kilpatrick.

On completion the wind farm will make a major contribution to Britain's commitment to renewable energy, eventually providing enough electricity to power 200,000 homes - roughly sufficient to power the housing needs of Glasgow - and save 720,000 tonnes per year of carbon dioxide emissions.

Commenting on the project, Greg Fitzgerald, Chief Executive of Galliford Try, said:

"In just three years we have established ourselves as an industry leader in the renewable energy sector. This is our third windfarm for Scottish Power, and the contract to work on the Whitelee project, Europe's largest onshore wind farm development, reinforces our position at the forefront of a growing and strategically important market."
