ISG InteriorExterior - Retail Development - London, £30m Project to Build World's Largest Audi Centre

Date: 31 Oct 2006

ISG InteriorExterior has secured a £30 million shell and core contract to build the world's largest Audi Centre for Audi UK. The new facility will be built on the former site of SmithKline House, famous for its large illuminated Lucozade bottle - a sight familiar to millions of London commuters on the elevated section of the M4 in Middlesex.

The new Audi Centre, designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, will become an instant landmark within the region and redefine consumers' expectations of a car showroom. The centre boasts 17,667 square metres of retail, servicing, office, conference, exhibition and museum space across seven floors, with Audi's new car display space cleverly designed to be level with the M4 flyover and visible to millions of commuters every day.

The first phase of the project sees ISG InteriorExterior commence construction of two large underground levels, providing state-of-the-art workshop and servicing areas. The upper of these two floors then provides the platform for an elegant five-storey steel frame structure with an inclined glazed front elevation, which tapers towards the rear of the building and is clad with contemporary powder coated metal panels.

Internally, the Audi Centre has three floors of sales and exhibition space and two further floors providing conference and office accommodation. The top two floors feature a central void area providing and impressive view of the high-tech showroom area below. The building has strong environmental credentials and utilises an open loop geothermal system to provide ambient temperature control, with four boreholes sunk to a depth of 160 metres. A sophisticated building management system further enhances the energy efficiency of the Audi Centre, automatically controlling shading systems to ensure a constant temperature is maintained throughout the building.

David Lawther, CEO for ISG InteriorExterior commented: "The new Audi Centre is set to become a key facility for the company within the UK and we are delighted to be playing such a major role in this high profile and important project for Audi UK. ISG InteriorExterior has built up an enviable reputation for successfully delivering challenging and technically complex projects across the UK, and this latest contract award underlines our commitment to working closely with clients to develop innovative and exciting structures which enhance our built environment."
