Carillion - General - UK, Safety Award for Great Western Hospital

Date: 15 Nov 2006

Carillion has been awarded the coveted Five Star Health and Safety Audit Award from the British Safety Council, for its work at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

Representatives from Carillion and the Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust received the award during a ceremony at Armourers' Hall in London. It is the second year running that Carillion in partnership with the NHS Trust has won the award and comes hot on the heels of winning a Building Better Healthcare award for catering services at the Wiltshire hospital.

The award was given following a rigorous evaluation of the effectiveness of safety management and programmes at the hospital. Carillion and the Trust now go forward into the Sword of Honour competition, which involves further inspections and audits.

Carillion facilities director Neil Sutherland said: "We are delighted to have received this recognition for a second time. First class health and safety is vital as we need to provide the safest environment possible for patients, staff and visitors to the hospital."

Carillion completed construction of the £135m Great Western Hospital in 2002 and the attached £29m Brunel Treatment Centre early in 2005. It is now operating the facilities under a 30-year PFI contract, providing catering, cleaning, helpdesk, security, portering and estates management services to the Swindon & Marlborough NHS Trust.
