Turley Associates - Mixed-Use Development - Wirral Waters, £4.5 Billion Regeneration in Wirral Waters

Date: 14 Nov 2006

Turley Associates, one of the UK's leading independent planning and urban design consultancies, is set to play a lead role in the £4.5 billion Wirral Waters project, one of the largest regeneration proposals in the UK.

The state-of-the-art proposals will see the transformation of Birkenhead Docks into an international waterfront destination rivalling cities such as Sydney, New York and Shanghai.

The firm has been appointed by Peel Holdings - the owners of Mersey Docks & Harbour Company and Liverpool John Lennon Airport - to act as lead on the planning and urban design strategy and frameworks.

The massive 18 million sq ft proposal will offer a whole new community environment for the people of Wirral and beyond, providing thousands of new jobs and major benefits for the local economy and attracting tourists from all around the world. The proposals will also protect the long-term security of deep-water port facilities and support the delivery of the Inner Wirral Housing Market Renewal objectives.

Chairman Rob Turley said: "We are delighted to be involved with such a prestigious project. We believe our involvement in a project of this scale and complexity is a clear recognition of our track record in delivery through our integrated planning and urban design teams."

Turley Associates' Manchester office, one of nine offices across the country, will be working with other consultants, including Broadway Malyan and Savell Bird and Axon, to help develop and deliver a Strategic Regeneration Framework, covering issues such as land use, urban design, landscape, movement, social and economic regeneration, tourism, community engagement, capacity building, infrastructure and remediation.

This will be followed by the development of Neighbourhood Frameworks for key locations and opportunity areas.

An outline planning application for the first phase is anticipated late 2007. The development will be phased over some 30 years due to its immense scale.

Turley Associates has grown to 175-strong since its creation in 1983. It boasts some 99 chartered planners, and 25 qualified urban designers. The firm specialises in providing advice to private and public sector organisations working in the retail, industrial and commercial, housing, leisure, education, health, urban design, regeneration, heritage, energy, waste management and minerals developments sectors.
