English Partnerships - Mixed-Use Development - Barking, Green Light for 10,800 Homes at Barking Riverside
Date: 17 Nov 2006
Plans for a community of 10,800 new homes at Barking Riverside have been given the green light by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Proposals will now move through to the next stage of the planning process, which will involve the Mayor of London giving his approval for the plans. Once all permissions have been secured the first homes could be seen on site by 2008.
Speaking after the announcement Barking Riverside Ltd. Board Director Duncan Innes said; "We are delighted that the planning committee gave such a resounding endorsement for the scheme and the go-ahead to proceed to the next stage. Barking Riverside has the potential to deliver an incredible range of benefits and facilities to the community, in addition to 10,800 new homes. We are looking forward to delivering on these promises."
Barking Riverside is being delivered by a joint venture between English Partnerships, the national regeneration agency and Bellway. Proposals for Barking Riverside, will see thousands of mixed-tenure homes delivered over a 20-year programme. The scheme encompasses new transport and social infrastructure and aims to make home ownership more accessible by providing a broad range of housing at affordable prices. All homes will meet exacting standards for energy efficiency and will have carbon emissions up to 50% lower than traditional housing.
The scheme will be brought forward in three interconnected quarters. A 2km riverside quarter will provide apartments overlooking the Thames, while the western and eastern quarter will comprise one to four bedroom accommodation in a mix of family housing and apartments.
The first phases of development will involve the construction of 1,500 homes, a new primary school, local neighbourhood centre and the first phase of the secondary school as well as providing public access to the waterfront and enhanced access to Barking Town Centre, with the East London Transit. By the time that the development has grown to 4,000 homes it is envisaged that the DLR extension will be operational through the site.
