Carillion - Mixed-Use Development - London, Carillion Cpmpletes £60m Lewisham Hospital Extension
Date: 13 Dec 2006
Carillion has successfully completed and handed over a £60 million PFI extension to Lewisham Hospital in London.
The extension has been named "Riverside" and consists of 22,000 square metres of hospital comprising theatres, theatre recovery, specialist treatment rooms, CCU, HDU and four-bed wards across seven levels.
The project team managed the construction from the first spade being put in the ground right through to supplying and installing the last ventilator, syringe pump and defibrillator, something that is usually carried out by the NHS Trust themselves.
One of the key success factors in winning the project was the design and the maximum use made of the available site. The Riverside is flanked on three sides by the existing hospital and on the fourth by the Ravensbourne river.
The weaving "S" shape of the Ravensbourne river led to the design of an "S" shaped building which maximised the square area available for the new hospital. This presented its own set of challenges both with the internal design, and with on-site logistics. The curved nature of the building meant that each internal room was not square, resulting in the need to carefully plan the position of beds, storage space, worktops and equipment.
The procurement, delivery and installation of 76 separate equipment packages, which comprised a total of 6,000 separate pieces of equipment, presented a logistical challenge that had to be planned and managed early. This was in addition to the 40 standard construction type packages that also had to be procured and managed. The Carillion team worked collaboratively with the Trust to ensure all operations were well executed.
The new facility has received numerous visits from the NHS Trust, architects, other main contractors and senior Carillion staff, who have all been extremely impressed with the high level of quality achieved by the project team.
Carillion will now deliver facilities management services at the hospital under the terms of the 30-year PFI contract. Domestic services, such as catering, portering and cleaning will remain provided by the NHS Trust.
