Carillion - Mixed-Use Development - Oxford, Carillion completes £135m Oxford Radcliffe Hospital
Date: 21 Dec 2006
Carillion has successfully completed and handed over a £135 million PFI development at the Oxford John Radcliffe Hospital.
The new building consists of 55,000 square metres of hospital comprising 14 high technology operating theatres, specialist radiology units, intensive care beds and ward accommodation. Contracts for the development were signed in December 2003 and construction has been completed in three years.
A key success factor in winning the project was the planning of the clinical departments that make up the Head and Neck Centre and the Oxfordshire Children's hospital. Both parts of the new facility are linked to the existing Oxford Radcliffe hospital.
The new facility has received numerous visits from the NHS Trust, architects, other main contractors and senior Carillion staff, who have all been extremely impressed with the high level of quality achieved by the project team.
Carillion will now deliver a comprehensive range of facilities management services at the hospital under the terms of the 30-year PFI contract.
The Trust and Carillion project teams celebrated completion of the construction when The Hospital Company handed the keys of the buildings over to the Trust project director.
The 18th Century Radcliffe Infirmary will close as a hospital early next year. Many of the services currently based there will move to the Head and Neck Centre, which will be known as the West Wing, including neurosciences as well as specialist surgery services, plastic and craniofacial surgery, ear nose and throat (ENT) and the Oxford Eye Hospital.
The new Children's Hospital will, for the first time, bring all paediatric services in Oxford together under one roof. Oxford University also has a number of specialist research areas within the new buildings, reflecting the John Radcliffe Hospital's importance as one of the UK's premier teaching hospitals.
