Artist's impressions of the iconic building that will form the focal point of Wolverhampton's £300million Summer Row development have been released today (18 December 2007). Developers Multi Development UK Ltd have submitted areserved matters planning application to the city council for the striking building which would become a landmark on thecity's skyline.
The three-story building will be located at the corner of Cleveland Street and Snow Hill. Detailed designs for the building
incorporates two levels of retail with leisure uses above, including a cinema.
As well as the iconic building, Multi have also submitted another reserved matters application concerning landscaping proposals for the scheme. This includes specifying the type and colour of the proposed materials, planting and furniture
to be used within the streets of the scheme, providing an enhanced shopping environment whilst ensuring that Summer Row's public realm complements and enhances the quality of the City Centre's urban environment.
Mark Rebbeck, Multi Development's UK Development Manager said: "We are pleased to have submitted the finalReserved Matters Planning Applications to Wolverhampton City Council as we view this submission as marking an important step in bringing the scheme closer to reality. We are hopeful that the applications will be approved early in 2008, which will allow us to meet our timetable of going onsite in Spring 2008".
Councillor Peter Bilson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Enterprise for Wolverhampton City Council, said: "Summer Row will transform Wolverhampton offering a shopping and leisure mix that this City deserves. It will create
thousands of jobs and attract people from miles around. Our planning officers are working with Multi to ensure we get a landmark and eye-catching development."
Design
Multi Development has appointed renowned architects Van Heerden & Partners from the Netherlands to design the Iconic Building. Commenting on the design, Clé van Heerden, Head Architect at the practice said: "Our design for Summer Row is by far the furthest we've ever gone in proposing something different, with its gentle elegant curves and its inviting appearance."
Summer Row
Summer Row will significantly contribute to regenerating the southern area of Wolverhampton City Centre by bringing economic growth and new job opportunities to the Black Country. It is expected that almost 1,000 jobs will be created during the construction period with 1,000 jobs created when the scheme is finished.
In terms of its scale and mix of functions, the 600,000 sq ft Summer Row will be unique in its field. The mix of shops, restaurants and apartments and the architecture will provide a contemporary city experience with an emphasis on creating inviting public spaces. Over 85 shops will be created including 2 medium sized units, a cinema, restaurants and cafés, 140 apartments and basement parking for 760 cars.
Multi Development is awaiting the Secretary of State's decision relating to the CPO Public Local Inquiry, which is expected early 2008. Summer Row is forecast to open in Autumn 2010.
