HLM Architects - General Development - Newport, South Wales

Planning consent has been granted for replacement Bettws High School in Newport, South Wales. Designed by HLM Architects in Cardiff, construction of the new school will start at the beginning of 2008 and is due to complete towards the end of 2009.

The design will allow wider access to the local communities with facilities that include 25m four lane swimming pool and four court sports hall, it will be a school that is highly accessible and welcoming; overtly promoting sustainable solutions. The school will accommodate 1100 pupils and provide the wider community with access to facilities during the day, confirming the school's role as an educational hub that can improve the quality of life in and around the community; supporting social cohesion, inclusion and prosperity.

Newport City Council councillor, Bob Poole, Cabinet Member for Young People Services said: "We are delighted to be improving education and lesiure facilities for the young people of Newport. Bettws is the commencement of one of the most ambitious educational capital programmes undertaken by the council."

Jonathan Jones, associate at HLM Architects leading the team, said: "The design we have created encompasses and communicates Newport City Council's: "All our children - all our business". The design has been developed to deliver an inclusive, inviting and inspiring educational environment for teachers, pupils and visitors. It will also act as a catalyst for regeneration, engendering a sense of pride and ownership."

Bettws and Hartridge High Schools will be the first of three secondary schools to be replaced in Newport by 2013. HLM Architects is the lead designer for the first two schools in the programme.
