The University of Strathclyde Estates Management has completed the £1.15 million refurbishment of a specialist research facility on its John Anderson Campus located at 48, North Portland Street, Glasgow G1 1XM.

The project, designed by HLM Architects, comprises specialist physics research workshops and laboratories, offices and facilities for the MSc course. It is located on levels 1, 2 and 3 of the Colville Building.

The new facility consists of: four experiment bays; a research preparation workshop; an electronic design and test area; a vacuum testing and thermal bake-out workshop; and a loading area. The walls of the bays are constructed from dense concrete blocks and lead-lined roof panels are moved to the active bay as required. Similarly, lead-lined doors are assigned to the front of the active bay.

An interior design strategy was developed to reflect the corporate colour of the Colville Building. A band of green along the floor and walls expresses this while being indicative of the Gamma Quantum Rays used as part of the experimental process.
