Morston Assets - Leisure Development - Barnwood, Gloucester
Date: 15 Jun 2009
Norfolk based regeneration specialists Morston Assets have announced they have agreed to sell a prominent site in Barnwood to Litfield Land for the development of a brand new 125 bedroom hotel. The site, fronting Corinium Avenue, was once part of the Electricity Board depot and forms part of Morston's regeneration master plan comprising offices and houses in addition to the hotel and a brand new football pitch to be handed over to Gloucester City Council, all of which obtained planning consent in 2008.
James Bunn, Morston Assets' Managing Director, commented: "This is a fantastic boost for Barnwood on a site that has been dormant for some time. I am sure a new hotel alongside the football pitch that we are in the process of constructing will be a catalyst for further development on this site and we are already in negotiations on the housing land. Bruton Knowles, who acted for us with the hotel negotiations, are also marketing the plot earmarked for office development where we have received strong interest."
Detailed planning consent for the proposed Ibis hotel was granted in January. Simon Caple of the hotel developer Litfield Land said: "This is a great site and gives us an opportunity to build a striking modern hotel which this area should really benefit from. The new business units being developed nearby, as well as Morston's proposals, will all be complimented by the new Ibis."
It is understood the hotel will provide 3 star accommodation and will have a restaurant and bar. The full size football pitch that Morston are constructing on the adjacent site is to be handed over to Gloucester City Council and it is understood that it will be run as a local community facility. The pitch will have floodlights and a newly fitted out pavilion. The works are expected to be complete this Summer and the hotel developers expect to be on site by the end of this year.
