HLM Architects - General Development - Hull

The HLM Architects-designed, £15 million Heath and well being centre in Hull City Centre has been given the green light. It will be developed by Citycare, the partnership between NHS Hull - the city's primary care trust - and the Sewell Group.

The new centre will be home to a walk-in GP service for both registered and non-registered patients and will be open from 8am to 8pm, 365 days a year. Users will be able to access GPs who will relocate from nearby surgeries, as well as dental, sexual health and addictions services. The centre will also be a base for paramedics and includes office accommodation for NHS Hull.

The project will be situated on Story Street in the heart of the City Centre and forms part of the Albion Square development plan, which will transform the run down Albion Square/Newtown area. The richness and heritage of the site has been reflected in the design and integrates this important new facility into the regeneration plans and the City as a whole.

The health centre will be 5 storeys, with departments stacked on a floor-by-floor basis around a central atrium. This will allow for a centralised reception at ground floor level, with more intimate sub-waiting areas and receptions within each individual department.

Demolition work on the former Grattan store, which currently occupies the site, should start in August and the new centre is expected to open in 2011. It will add to an already large investment in Hull's health care facilities, including the recently opened £67m Queen's Centre for Oncology and Haematology at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham, also designed by HLM Architects.
