Hammerson - Mixed-Use Development - Reading, The Oracle

The Oracle, Reading's £250 million regional retail and leisure destination which was developed by Hammerson as been awarded 'Best New Centre 2000'. The announcement was made last night at the annual BCSC Dinner at The Grovensor House Hotel, London.

The 65,000 sq m scheme represents a new benchmark in town centre regeneration. In little over two years the nine hectare site. formerly occupied by a bus station, gas works and brewery has been transformed into a new landmark for the Thames Valley.

Restaurants, bars, cafes, residential accommodation, public squares, performance areas, and shops have been integrated in the town centre providing a new civic and community focus. Central to the development has been the opening up of a 270 metre stretch of the River Kennet, which is now accessible to the public for the first time in over 100 years.

John Richards, Chief Lxecutive Hammerson said 'We are delighted that The Oracle has received this prestigious award. The scheme is the result of strong teamwork and considerable effort and represents an excellent example of joint public and private partnership. The Oracle has not only enhanced the town centre, but has provided a new vibrant riverside destinations.
