Chartwell Land - Retail Development - Cheltenham, Grovefield Way Site

Date: 16 Jul 2001

Chartwell Land, owner of the retail site at Grovefield Way in the Golden Valley, has confirmed that DIY retailer B&Q is planning a new Warehouse style store for Cheltenham.

A planning application is expected for the B&Q development at the end of July. The Grovefield Way site already has separate planning permissions for food and non-food retail development. A recent application for residential development on the site has now been withdrawn.

The new B&Q Warehouse store will create over 200 new jobs. It will complement and trade alongside B&Q's existing Supercentre on the Tewkesbury Road in Cheltenham. At approximately 80,000 square feet, the new store will help to meet the need for a high quality DIY store in Cheltenham.

Commenting on the plans, Jeremy Castle of Chartwell Land said:

"We had considered a residential development on the site, prior to B&Q expressing an interest. However, we were not able to reach final agreement with either the housing developer or Cheltenham's planners on issues of affordable housing and the density of development.

"We believe that the Warehouse store will offer a valuable addition to Cheltenham's shopping facilities, being a comprehensive one-stop home-improvement and DIY retail concept that is not currently available in the area. This is not the sort of store you can put in the town centre and this site, which has been earmarked for retail development for many years, is the right place for B&Q", he said.
