Building Design Partnership - Retail Development - BDP To Design Sheffield's Retail Quarter

Date: 12 Sep 2001

Sheffield City Council and Sheffield One have announced that Hammerson plc, with lead architects Building Design Partnership, have won the competition to become the preferred development partner for the new retail quarter in Sheffield City Centre.

The development team fought off strong competition from British Land and Multi Development Corporation to win this prestigious multi-million pound project.

The team was chosen according to a set of rigorous criteria including track record, creativity, innovation and design excellence, and ability to attract new retail names to the City Centre. It was a unanimous decision by the jury, comprised of members of Sheffield City Council, Sheffield One, English Partnerships, Yorkshire Forward and independent experts.

Creating a next generation retail quarter in the city centre is a vital strand of the Masterplan launched by Sheffield One earlier this year. The proposed new quarter will cover the area from Barkers Pool to Pinstone Street and the top of the Moor with a much expanded John Lewis Sheffield (Cole Brothers) at its hub.

Peter Coleman BDP's Director said "Our design provides a mixed use neighbourhood with street focused shops, city living and cultural uses, achieving vitality throughout the day. Having established a robust masterplan BDP and other architects will develop the design for individual buildings."

In addition to 600,000 sq ft of shops and cafes in outward facing buildings set in streets and squares, the mixed-use scheme comprises 124 units of housing, a 200 bedroom hotel and health club, a library, offices, a bus interchange and additional city centre car parking spaces. The focus of the scheme is the creation of a new crescent shaped street pattern which at the centre opens into a new public space.

The proposal involves urban repair both of existing buildings, some of which are listed, and existing streets reinforcing links to other parts of the city.
It is hope that a planning application for this £350 million development will be submitted mid 2002 with phased completion between June 2007 and March 2009.
