Chartwell Land - Retail Development - South Bristol, Hartcliffe, Imperial Park

Date: 02 Nov 2001

Chartwell Land's proposals for a new 106,000 sq ft Big W (Class A1) store at Imperial Park in Hartcliffe, South Bristol, have been given the go-ahead by the Secretary of State. The decision has been taken
not to call in the Big W planning application, which received the unanimous backing of Bristol City Council's Development Control (South & East) Committee on 10th October.

The new Big W store will make a major contribution to the ongoing regeneration of the Imperial Park site and the wider South Bristol area, including the creation of 230 new jobs and a contribution from Chartwell Land to a new City Council regeneration fund to provide training for local people seeking employment on the site.

Ian Mash iter, Development Director at Chartwell Land, commented,

"Chartwell Land is delighted with the Planning Committee's approval for the Big W store and the decision by the Secretary of State not to call in the application. This is another major step in the
regeneration of the Imperial Park site which, in turn, will act as a catalyst for future investment and jobs on the site and elsewhere in South Bristol."

Chartwell Land and Bristol City Council are now drawing up the S106 agreement that, in addition to Chartwell Land's contribution to the regeneration fund, will see Chartwell Land funding pedestrian and
cycle links into Imperial Park and providing a subsidy to local bus operators to ensure that bus services are dir£.ct£:d into the site, for the benefit of shoppers and staff alike.

Over 100 local residents and community organisations signed petitions and wrote letters to Bristol City Council urging it to support Big W, with not a single objection.
