Chartwell Land - Retail Development - Walsall, Crown Wharf Shopping Park

Date: 06 Dec 2001

Chartwell Land's 171,000 sq ft development has recently opened fully let and is trading under the new name of Crown Wharf Shopping Park.

Occupying a 14-acre site adjacent to Walsall Town Centre, the scheme has been carried out in partnership with Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council. At a cost of £27 million this scheme is Chartwell Land's largest brownfield regeneration scheme undertaken to date.

Chartwell Land can now reveal that fast growing Japanese retailer Uniqlo have taken a 10,000 sq ft unit on the Shopping Park. Early lettings to Courts, Powerhouse, JD Sports, Brunswick Shoes and T K Maxx have been followed by Peacocks, Deichmann Shoes, JJB Sports, Birthdays, Blockbuster and Mothercare and Next who are both relocating from town centre outlets.

The development has taken five years to complete and involved the acquisition of some thirty freehold and leasehold interests to assemble the site, compulsory purchase and road closure orders and the construction of new premises to relocate two businesses displaced from the site.

David Gregory of Chartwell Land comments, "With easy access to Junction 10 of the M6 and fronting Walsall's ring road, the scheme offers an accessible high quality shopping park environment and we are pleased it has proved such a great success."

The completion of Crown Wharf Shopping Park marks the end of Phase 11 of Chartwell Land and Walsall MBC's development programme in Walsall. The development follows the partnership's earlier success with Phase 1 which provided 8,546.8 sq m (92,000 sq ft) of prime retail space for Walsall Town Centre and the new showpiece £21 million art gallery.

Chartwell Land will be retaining Crown Wharf in its investment portfolio.
