Paddington Basin Developments Limited - Mixed-Use Development - London W2, Paddington Basin
Date: 11 Feb 2002
Paddington Basin Developments Limited has unveiled plans for three innovative new pedestrian bridges at it's 2.1 million sq ft mixed use regeneration scheme at Paddington Basin, London W2.
The largest of the three bridges, Station Bridge, designed by Langlands & Bell and Atelier One will link the Basin development to Paddington Station and is likely to carry up to one thousand people an hour. The design reflects the engineering of the station whilst being light, elegant and translucent at the same time.
The East Bridge, which will link Praed Street to Edgware Road, is a moving bridge designed by Marcus Taylor and Buro Happold. The stainless steel and glass structure will be able to open up, allowing barges to pass along the canal, a process which will take about five minutes. This landmark bridge will have an unmistakable and dominant profile from whichever angle it is viewed, providing the basin with a dynamic focal point.
A third bridge will span a new inlet being created between the two wings of the Richard Rogers Partnership designed Waterside building, which was pre-let to Marks and Spencer in May 2001.
The three key crossing points were identified in the original masterplan by Terry Farrell & Partners, who together with Richard Rogers Partnership have been involved throughout the design process to ensure the bridges will relate architecturally to the surrounding buildings.
Subject to planning permission, construction will commence within 2002 with completion of all three bridges expected within 18 months. This will coincide with construction of The Point and Waterside, the first two commercial buildings at Paddington Basin, which have been pre-let to Orange and Marks & Spencer respectively.
