British Design Partnership - Mixed-Use Development - Derby, CityScape

Date: 11 Mar 2002

The Derby City Partnership launched CityScape, a new vision for the city at the end of February (2002) at Pride Park, home to Derby County Football Club. The vision was prepared by Building Design Partnership, with assistance from Donaldsons and Amion Consulting.

The Derby CityScape Urban Design and Development Strategy, which is expected to become the principal delivery focus for the proposed Urban Regeneration Company in Derby, sets out a radical uplift in the range and quality of key attractions in the city centre with complementary strategies for city living and the integration of public realm and transportation enhancements, building on the recently approved Connecting Derby city centre transportation project.

The Derby CityScape vision re-establishes the city as a prime regional player with new, landmark opportunities for cultural and visitor attractions in the newly branded Civic Quarter which will create a new identity and focus for the city. The plans for other Quarters of the city – Riverside, Friargate, Becketwell and the Northern Quarter - will realise major new investment opportunities for retailing, inward investors, local entrepreneurs and residential developers.

In the longer term the vision sets guidelines for change in edge of centre locations, for example reconnecting the city with the railway station and Pride Park development through a major mixed use business and residential community.

Francis Glare, BDP Planning Director, said that the new vision was a major step in the realisation of the City’s ambition to be a Top 10 City.
