Date: 20 Mar 2002

The London Development Agency (LDA), and the London Borough of Greenwich today announced the appointment of CR Chelverton Properties and Berkeley Homes as the joint developers of a major leisure development for Woolwich town centre, fronting the Royal Arsenal.

Tom Keady, Development Manager for the Royal Arsenal, said: ‘The London Development Agency welcomes the opportunity to put into place another piece of the regeneration jigsaw at the Royal Arsenal. The proposed development will provide links from the existing town centre through the Royal Arsenal to the Thames and will provide leisure facilities with ancillary residential, creating jobs and providing vibrant modern facilities for the local community.’

Leader of Greenwich Council, Chris Roberts, comments ‘The Woolwich and Thamesmead area has attracted investment on a large scale over recent years. Its economy is growing, new homes are being developed on a large scale, and the opening up of the riverfront is helping to achieve a dramatic transformation of the area. The Royal Arsenal is developing as an important focal point for this regeneration, and the new leisure development will further consolidate the strategic role of this important site, not just for Woolwich but for the rest of the borough and the wider Thames Gateway area’.

Chris Vaughan of CR Chelverton Properties comments ‘The unique historic setting of the Royal Arsenal will allow us to create a high quality leisure destination, in an attractive riverside environment, and we look forward to building on the success already achieved at the Royal Arsenal by Berkeley Homes and the IO Group’.

The 300,000 sq ft development will be situated adjacent to the recently opened Royal Artillery ‘Firepower’ Museum, and within easy walking distance of the proposed station for the DLR extension, expected to open 2007. It will contain a range of leisure facilities, including a multiplex cinema, bowling alley, health & fitness, comedy club, bars, restaurants, cafés, hotel, retail, residential and a children’s nursery. Lambert Smith Hampton and King Sturge are the letting agents.
