Gazeley Properties - Retail Development - Leicestershire, Magna Park

Date: 29 May 2002

Leading supermarket chain Asda, is to occupy a purpose built automated distribution centre at Gazeley Properties’ Magna Park in Lutterworth, Leicestershire.

Ground and steelworks have already been installed and construction of the 62,583 sq m (673,663 sq ft) non-food distribution centre is scheduled for completion in September 2002. The state-of-the-art facility, which provides 2,578 sq m (27,750 sq ft) of office accommodation, is set to become fully operational by summer 2003, following an extensive fit-out by Asda.

Set on a 16.19 hectare (40 acre) plot on Europe’s largest dedicated distribution park, the warehouse will provide a central hub for the distribution of Asda’s general merchandise to regional distribution centres throughout the UK.

Gazeley has appointed GSE (UK) Ltd, a subsidiary of French contractors GSE, and Simons Construction as joint contractors to deliver the multi-million pound project.

Gazeley’s construction director Lee Pettit, comments:
“This mammoth project represents a major investment in Asda Walmart's distribution chain and reinforces its confidence in us to deliver its distribution needs.

“It is also a wonderful opportunity for us to further develop the unique Gazeley way of working with our established supply chain as we increase our development activity across Europe through the roll out of the successful Magna Park brand.”

Following this latest deal, only 33.59 hectares (83 acres) of development land remains available at Magna Park, which is capable of providing somewhere in the region of 111,480 sq m (1.2 million sq ft) of high quality warehouse, distribution and office accommodation.

Fuller Peiser and Lambert Smith Hampton are joint letting agents for Magna Park.
