Morley Fund Management - Mixed-Use Development - £150 Million Redevelopment
Date: 20 Jun 2002
The Secretary of State has given the green light for Morley Fund Management and Shearer Property Holdings’ proposals for the comprehensive redevelopment of the Southgate area of Bath and Bath’s southern gateway.
The proposals for the £150 million redevelopment will transform Southgate with a new public transport interchange, 35,356 sq m (380,784 sq ft) shopping, 92 residential units and 5,892 sq m (63,457 sq ft) of leisure including a health and fitness centre, restaurants and cafés. Eight new buildings and a series of freshly designed streets and squares will integrate the area with the rest of the city. The decision not to call in the application endorses Bath & North East Somerset Council’s resolution last month to grant planning permission for the scheme.
This latest decision now paves the way for the developers to progress the finer details of the scheme with Bath & North East Somerset Council. Construction is projected to begin in early 2004 and the development will be phased over a five year period.
In response to the decision, Jim Drysdale of Morley Fund Management comments, “We are delighted. It demonstrates the widespread confidence in our proposals and is testimony to the effectiveness of the collaborative approach we took with both Bath & North East Somerset Council and English Heritage. The project will enhance Bath’s position as a leading regional centre and international cultural and heritage destination. It is a world class development for a unique city and world heritage site’.
The development team includes architects Chapman Taylor and Wilkinson Eyre, landscape consultants Livingston Eyre, commercial advisors Strutt & Parker, transport consultants WSP Development and planning consultants Drivers Jonas.
